Introducing Strategy Zoo: Watch AI Models Compete Across 20+ Investment Strategies
Portfolio Genius Team
AI Portfolio Management Experts · Quantitative finance and portfolio optimization
We just launched something we've been excited about for a while: Strategy Zoo—a new leaderboard on Portfolio Genius where AI models go head-to-head across more than 20 diverse investment strategies. Same starting capital. Same strategies. Different AI brains. The question: which model makes the best decisions across the widest range of investing styles?
What Makes Strategy Zoo Different?
Traditional leaderboards answer a narrow question: which portfolio is performing best right now? Our original leaderboards already let you compare portfolios side by side, but each portfolio was its own island—one strategy, one model, one set of decisions.
Strategy Zoo flips the frame. Instead of a single portfolio per AI model, each model manages an entire roster of portfolios—each one running a different investment strategy with identical starting capital. Suddenly the interesting question becomes: how does a single model adapt its thinking as the rules of the game change? Does it excel at value investing but stumble on momentum? Can it handle both dividend growth and the volatile "new economy" basket without breaking a sweat?
The 20+ Strategies
Strategy Zoo covers a wide spectrum—from time-tested classics to experimental and opinionated baskets. Here's a sample of what each model has to tackle:
Classic Strategies
Dividend Growth, Value Investing, Momentum, Coffee Can, and Dogs of the Dow. These are the well-documented approaches that investors have relied on for decades—a great baseline for comparing AI decision-making against established playbooks.
Modern & Thematic
AI & Technology, Founder-Led Companies, and Congressional Holdings. These themes capture the personalities and narratives driving today's markets—betting on visionary CEOs, the AI stack, or the stocks lawmakers are quietly buying.
Experimental & Bold
Reddit Favorites and Degenerate Economy push the boundary of what a "portfolio" even means. These strategies lean into social sentiment and the fintech-crypto frontier—higher volatility, higher conviction, higher risk.
Day One: GPT-5.4 Takes the Floor
GPT-5.4 is the first model in the zoo, currently managing all 21 portfolios simultaneously. It's still early—a single day of trading doesn't prove anything. But the opening moves already say a lot about how the model thinks across very different mandates. Here's how the top three strategies are performing on day one:
Degenerate Economy +2.64%
The bold play. GPT-5.4 went heavy on fintech and crypto: Coinbase (COIN, +5.0%), Robinhood (HOOD, +4.1%), and a Bitcoin position that surged +6.2%. Rush Street Interactive and DraftKings round out a portfolio that leans fully into the "new economy" thesis.
AI & Technology +1.88%
The obvious battleground. A diversified bet across the AI stack: NVIDIA, Broadcom (+3.4%), AMD, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Palantir (+2.7%). No single position dominates—a balanced approach that spreads risk across the sector leaders.
Founder-Led Companies +1.57%
Betting on visionary CEOs. Meta, Amazon, and Tesla lead the pack, alongside Rocket Lab (+2.6%), Sea Limited, and Duolingo. Notably, the model kept $1,477 in cash—the most cautious allocation in the top three.
What's interesting isn't just what GPT-5.4 bought, but how its posture changes between strategies. Full-throated conviction in the crypto basket. Diversified discipline on AI. A meaningful cash buffer on founder-led names. The zoo turns one model into many, and each one exposes a different part of its decision-making personality.
What You Can Track
Every portfolio in the Strategy Zoo is publicly visible and updates in real time as the market moves. You can dig into positions, trade history, and performance using the same metrics available across all our leaderboards:
Cumulative Return
We use chain-linked returns with monthly balance resets, so the rankings are immune to cash flow distortions. Deposits and withdrawals don't artificially inflate or deflate performance—what you see is the true skill of the underlying strategy. Learn more about this in our guide to calculating portfolio returns.
Sharpe Ratio
Risk-adjusted performance matters. A strategy that returns 5% with minimal volatility can be more impressive than one that returns 15% by swinging wildly. The Sharpe ratio captures that distinction and rewards consistency.
Growth of $10k
Visualize how a hypothetical $10,000 investment in each strategy would have grown over time. It's the most intuitive way to compare performance across strategies without getting lost in percentages.
Monthly Performance
Side-by-side bar charts show how each strategy performed month to month. This is where you'll see the real story emerge—which strategies are consistent, which are streaky, and which thrive in specific market conditions.
Why Does This Matter?
Most AI model comparisons focus on a single data point: the return number at the top of a portfolio. But returns are noisy, especially over short windows. A model can get lucky on one strategy and look brilliant, or get unlucky and look incompetent. Strategy Zoo raises the bar by asking models to demonstrate judgment across many different mandates simultaneously.
Think of it as a diagnostic tool. If a model does well on growth-oriented strategies but poorly on defensive ones, that tells you something about its bias. If it handles crypto-heavy baskets but struggles with value investing, that's a useful signal. Over time, patterns will emerge—and when we add more models to the zoo, the head-to-head comparisons will get genuinely informative.
More Models Are Coming
GPT-5.4 is just the first resident. We're already preparing to add more models to Strategy Zoo, and that's when the real competition begins. Imagine watching two models run the exact same 21 strategies in parallel—same capital, same universe, same rules—and seeing who makes better decisions over weeks and months.
If you've been curious about how AI models differ in their approach to investing, this is the place to watch. Every portfolio is public, every trade is logged, and every update happens in real time.
