Introduction

Transparency is important to us. This page explains where Portfolio Genius gets its data — Tiingo for market prices and Plaid for brokerage account syncing — how often it's updated, and what limitations exist. We believe you should understand exactly what data powers your portfolio analysis.

Market data
02

Primary Market Data Provider

Tiingo

Our primary source for market data is Tiingo, a financial data platform that provides institutional-quality data. Tiingo sources its data from major exchanges and data aggregators.

Accuracy

Data Accuracy and Limitations

We strive to provide accurate data, but there are important limitations to understand:

Important disclaimers
  • Market data may be delayed up to 15 minutes during trading hours
  • Historical data accuracy depends on source data quality and corporate action adjustments
  • Stock splits, dividends, and other corporate actions may take 1-2 days to be fully reflected
  • Delisted securities may have incomplete or missing data
  • Data should not be used as the sole basis for investment decisions

Corporate Actions

Stock splits, dividends, mergers, and spinoffs are handled through adjusted price data. However, there may be brief periods where recent corporate actions are not yet reflected. We recommend verifying critical data with your brokerage account.

Brokerage
06

Brokerage Data

Portfolio Genius connects to your brokerage accounts to retrieve your actual positions, transactions, and balances. We support two connection methods: Plaid auto-sync (2,400+ institutions) and Alpaca direct integration.

Plaid (Auto-Sync)

Plaid is our primary brokerage data provider, connecting to 2,400+ financial institutions including Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Vanguard, Robinhood, E*TRADE, Interactive Brokers, Merrill Lynch, Wells Fargo, and many more. Connect once and your portfolio auto-syncs continuously.

  • Holdings: Current positions, quantities, and cost basis
  • Transactions: Buys, sells, dividends, fees, and transfers
  • Cash Balances: Available cash and total account value
  • Account Metadata: Institution name, account type, and mask
  • Sync Frequency: Webhook-triggered updates for near real-time accuracy

Plaid Security

Security details
  • Your login credentials are never stored by Portfolio Genius — authentication happens directly through Plaid
  • Plaid uses bank-level encryption (AES-256) for all data in transit and at rest
  • Read-only access — we can never execute trades or move funds through Plaid
  • Same technology used by Venmo, Coinbase, and thousands of other financial apps

Alpaca (Direct Trading)

Alpaca provides full OAuth integration with automatic position and trade syncing. Unlike Plaid, Alpaca also supports live trade execution — you can act on AI recommendations with one click.

How Plaid and Tiingo Work Together

Plaid and Tiingo serve complementary roles. Plaid provides your portfolio composition — what you own, when you bought it, and at what cost. Tiingo provides real-time market pricing — what those holdings are worth right now. When Tiingo does not cover a particular symbol, we fall back to the price reported by Plaid.

AI analysis
07

AI Analysis

Our AI-powered portfolio analysis uses market data combined with:

  • Financial News: Recent news articles about your holdings
  • Web Research: Public information from company filings, news sources, and financial publications
  • Market Context: Broader market conditions and sector performance

AI analysis is provided for informational purposes only and should not be considered financial advice. Always consult with a qualified financial advisor before making investment decisions.
